June  2010

I would like to let everyone know how this summer is going to work. We will start outside Monday, June 21st. We are offering 11 workouts per week. I think that senior group needs to be at 9 practices per week and bulldogs need 6.  Both senior and bulldog are welcome at all the practices, but when I figure out attendance % it will be based on 9 for senior and 6 for bulldog.  Swimmers that don’t attend morning workout but come to afternoon will be doing all aerobic endurance work for the full 2 hours. Those that make the afternoon workout the 2nd of the day will be doing an hour and a half of anaerobic work (speed) and a half hour of dryland. Swimmers not doing morning will not be invited to do dryland.  Our morning workouts start promptly at 6:00 a.m. Just like last summer, any swimmer that arrives more than 12 minutes late will not be allowed in the pool.

Thanks for your cooperation.

May  2010

Well, just three weeks into the long course season and we are on our way. I would like to talk briefly about practice attendance. The first Tuesday of each month I will be posting attendance percentages at the pool. Take a look to see where you are at compared to where you think you might be. No matter what age, or what level you are at, you cannot get better if you do not come to practice.

At our April 29th banquet, I talked about the power of your mind and how important it is to set goals and look at those goals often. Believe in yourself; believe in your training, use your mind to your advantage. If you feel you need help setting goals, myself and the rest of the coaching staff is available to help, just ask. Donnot forget Tuesday, May 4th is our Bulldog swimmer/parent meeting with the head coach, and Monday, May 17th  is our Parenting for Success talk with the head coach. Please check the web site and mark those days, hope to see you there.

April  2010

Welcome back to the start of the 2010 long course season. We worked on a couple of things the last 2 weeks of short course, lets bring those into this season and create good habits. One of the things I want to concentrate on is getting at least 2 strokes off the walls before breathing, this will allow you to better utilize the speed you get from the push off. Another good habit that needs to be formed is working on stroke drills. When given drills to work on, remember to go slow and do the drill properly. I think we have too many of you that want to go too fast during drills, thus compromising the good habits that we’re trying to reinforce. The last thing i’d like to talk about this month is coming to practice. I don’t mean just being there, although attendance is very important. What i mean is, if you’re going to be at practice – be at practice. Just showing up and doing the sets isn’t enough. Use your mind, know where you’re at in the set, know what interval you’re on, and look at the clock to make sure you’re making the interval. Look at the clock to know how fast you’re swimming. All these tings will lead to a better workout and better meet swims.

October 2009

As we start the 2009-2010 short course season, I would like to say welcome back to our returning BAC members and welcome to all our new members.  A couple of reminders, please make every effort to get your swimmers to practice on time, it is very disruptive when a swimmer comes in after practice has started.  We have modified the dryland program and it is my wish that all senior group swimmers make dryland mandatory, with this being said starting Oct 20 senior group practice will be 5:30 – 8:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, with the first half hour of those practices being dryland.  The Bulldogs can come to dryland on those days but must be there on time to participate. The Bulldogs will be spending the last ½ hour of practice on Wednesdays learning and doing our dryland program.  Finally, please set goals, this is very important at all ages.  Once you have your goals written down, look at them at least 3 times a day.  Believe in your goals, imbed them into your sub-conscious and make them come true.  I would be more than happy to sit down with anybody and help them set goals if needed.

See you at the pool

June 2009

Schools out! I hope everyone learned a lot and is ready to move on.  As for me I cannot wait to start training outside.  A summer schedule will be handed out at the pool.

I want to emphasize one important point. Morning practice starts at 6:00 am sharp.  The only reason to be late for a morning practice is that you just did not get out of bed in time.  I understand that sometimes in the afternoon parents have trouble getting swimmers to practice on time.  We will still encourage swimmers to get to afternoons on time but there will be no punishment.  Mornings are a different matter, swimmers that show up in the morning after warm-up is over will not be allowed to practice that morning.  I am sorry it has to be this way, but there are two reasons for this.

     1. Along with teaching swimming skills, it is my job to teach skills that will help each child as they get older and become an adult.  Punctuality is one of those important skills.

     2. It disrupts workout when swimmers walk in / in the middle of a set or work out.

I would also like to say that those swimmers needing to leave afternoon practice early to get to your summer club meet will be able to do so without a problem.

With all this being said, lets have a great summer.

See you at the pool

May 2009

First of all I would like to say thank you for greeting me with the respect and enthusiasm that you have shown.

Over the last 4 weeks I have observed one thing for sure, that BAC has a hard working group of swimmers.

I would ask that you keep an eye on your attendance.  Whatever level you swim at repetition is going to be a key in improving.

Goal setting, has everyone set goals for this season?  If you have not, you need to.  Pick three specific events and times that you are looking forward to achieving this season, write them down somewhere that will make it easy for you to look at them at least 3 times per day.  If you need help, I am more than happy to assist you.

I hope that you continue to work hard, enjoy yourself, watch your attendance, remember and concentrate on what you have learned, make friends, and above all stay positive in everything you say and do.  Remember, you are great.

See you at the pool

Greg
